Our desire is to see our communities transformed by the Gospel, our churches on fire by the love of God and the nation being blessed.

Faith Community

YWAM is an international volunteer movement of Christians from many backgrounds, cultures and Christian traditions. We are dedicated to serving Jesus throughout the world. Also known as YWAM (pronounced “WHY-wham”), our purpose is simply to know God and to make Him known.

When YWAM international began in 1960, our main focus was giving young people opportunities to demonstrate the love of Jesus to the whole world, according to His command in Mark 16:15. Today, we still focus on youth, but we have members (known as “YWAMers”) of almost every age. Many of our short-term efforts have grown into long-term endeavors that have impacted lives and nations.

YWAM has a decentralized structure that encourages new vision and the exploration of new ways to change lives. Through training we convey the message of the gospel, Mercy Ministry enables us to care for those in need. Our evangelism uses a vibrant concoction of performing arts, digital media, worship, sports, special events and more. We partner with the Church in expanding the Kingdom.

YWAM currently operates in more than 1000 locations in over 180 countries, with a staff of over 18,000.

YWAM Adelaide

In 1987 Mark and Helen Brokenshire were approached about moving to Adelaide to start up a new YWAM center there. After hearing God say, “Go!” they ran a Discipleship Training School in Goulburn with a dedicated team of Staff who also felt the call to go to South Australia. Moving into SA as a team they lived in various locations until eventually purchasing a property in the Adelaide Hills.

After some 20 years of being based in the Adelaide hills the team felt led to relocate the main operating location to Elizabeth, a Northern Suburb of Adelaide.

Living in a new season with fresh challenges we are looking to the future with a sense passion and fire for the things God has for us in this location!

YWAM Melbourne

In 1983 Steve Aherne led a DTS team to pioneer YWAM in Melbourne, coming from Goulburn, on what became a “spying out the land” visit. Their first facility was a few room consisting of a caretaker’s cottage and the Sunday school classroom at St. John’s Anglican Church in Camberwell.

After a while a house became available in Toorak, Melbourne’s most fashionable suburb. From Toorak ywam moved to a facility in Collingwood. Ideally located close to the city, it was an old nursing home, owned by Melbourne City Mission. As the team grew, they began believing God for a permanent property where the work could be established and grow.

After much prayer and commitment, we discovered what is now our Surrey Hills base.

YWAM Hobart

In February of 1985, a small team with the Lucerne Family – sent from YWAM Canberra, ACT pioneered the base in Hobart. For the first few months the base operated out of a caravan in the local caravan park until a suitable flat in the city was found. Almost every night they would walk the streets and reach out to local young streetwise people by providing a city café within a bus, called ‘The Ark’.

In 1988 YWAM Tasmania received the property where we are still located today: 200 acres of farmland situated on a ridge overlooking the township of Sorell and the sea. Originally there were three farmhouses on the property. Today there are four with extensions for more accommodation and additional buildings.
